Contains 86 autograph letters signed and unsigned, bound, dated August 22, 1685 to August 25, 1688. No. 85 is partly written in another hand. The letters take the form of newsletters and there are many references to recent publications. Probably written by James Fraser who was secretary of Chelsea Hospital and a well-known bibliophile and benefactor of his alma mater, King's College, Aberdeen.

Robert Southwell was born near Kinsale, Ireland, and educated at Queen's College, Oxford. Knighted in 1665 and appointed envoy to the court of Portugal, Southwell successfully concluded the Peace of Lisbon in 1668. He held several other diplomatic posts under James II, including envoy to Lisbon again, and then to Brussels and Brandenburg.
